Bulgarian PC Market Contracted in 2009, But Will Rebound in 2010, Says IDC
Sofia, February 24, 2010
The total PC market in Bulgaria declined 21.5% in volume in 2009. According to the latest data from IDC, the global financial crisis has impacted both business and household demand. However, only in the fourth quarter did the Bulgarian PC market's decline exceed the average for the Central and Eastern European region.
"The local PC market currently suffers from a variety of inhibiting factors, such as the deterioration of purchasing power, restrictive credit conditions, and impoverished resellers," said Evelin Stoev, senior analyst in IDC Bulgaria. "The lack of confidence in the market's future development is also a key element in the picture. This is where government investments could be most valuable, by boosting trust and repositioning the market towards an upward trend."
In line with expectations, it was the desktop category that dragged the overall market down. Shipments of desktop PCs contracted 29.5% year on year, while downward pressure on prices accelerated a plunge of revenues. Both local assemblers and international brands suffered significant drops in sales. Driven primarily by consumer demand, the portable PC market contracted 16.2% year on year in 2009. Rather surprisingly, the x86 server segment was least impacted by the crisis, and shipments fell only 8.2% year on year, while in most European countries this segment was hit the hardest.
The combined market share of the top 3 vendors on the Bulgarian PC market – HP, Acer, and Asus – exceeded 40% in 2009.
"Despite the ongoing mix of gloom and caution on the economic front, the Bulgarian PC market is expected to pick up in the second half of 2010," said Stoev. "It is still to be seen to what extent the government will be a catalyst for local IT investments by implementing new projects."
